    1. How the Brain Makes Blame and Punishment Decisions

i.  New work by researchers at Vanderbilt University and Harvard University confirms that a specific area of the brain, the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, is crucial to punishment decisions. Researchers predicted and found that by altering brain activity in that region of the brain they could not only change how much subjects punished hypothetical defendants, but could also do so without changing how much subjects blamed those defendants.

An overview of the new study appears here.  And the full paper -- appearing in Neuron as “From Blame to Punishment: Disrupting Prefrontal Cortex Activity Reveals Norm Enforcement Mechanisms” -- is available here.

  1. New Overview of the Field of Law and Neuroscience

i.  A new encyclopedia entry – on the topic “Law and Neuroscience” -- is now available here.  It appears in the International Encyclopedia of Social and Behavioral Sciences (2nd Edition, 2015).
